Muhammad Hassan Storyline Condemned By United Arab Emirates Media Expert
According to several wrestling sites, the Muhammad Hassan storyline has been, and I quote, condemned by a media expert from the United Arab Emirates.

The media expert is stating that the whole storyline is exploiting the Arab stereotype, that WWE are only doing it for the money and that it might seriously worsen the overall view on the Arabian people.

News courtesy of ProWrestling.Com:

"WWE's recent storyline, which features Muhammad Hassan and Khosrov Daivari playing Arab-Americans taking out their frustrations on America, has been condemned by a media expert from the United Arab Emirates.

“The world needs to be reassured that America is good and coupled with the abuse issues this programming might do the opposite with respect to public opinion globally,” said Dr James Piecowye, assistant professor of Communication and Media Sciences at Zayed University in Dubai.

“World Wrestling Entertainment is exploiting a negative stereotype of Arabs which is perpetrated through news and entertainment media alike to make money,” said Piecowye. “WWE is about one thing: money.”

“The problem with the entertainment media and especially wrestling programming in general is that it over represents reality and this overrepresentation may be lost on some viewers.”

The article went on to talk about the stereotypical statement in Hassan's bio, as well as the fear that as WWE programming is exported across the globe, it might reinforce a negative stereotype."

News courtesy of PWInsider.Com:

"WWE's Muhammed Hussan and Khosrov Daivari made the front page of United Arab Emirates newspaper 7 Days today, noting that the two characters had been "condemmed" by a local media expert for "pandering to the lowest common denominator."

"The world needs to be reassured that America is good and coupled with the abuse issues, this programming might do the opposite with respect to public opinion globally," Dr James Piecowye, assistant professor of Communication and Media Sciences at Zayed University in Dubai, U.A.E. told the newspaper.

Piecowye stated that World Wrestling Entertainment was about one thing - money - and they were exploiting the negative stereotypes of Arabs to do so.

The article noted the WWE.com description of the two characters, which stated, "All Muhammad Hassan wanted was to coexist with his American neighbours and feel a sense of belonging. That wasn't meant to be. So now, Hassan and Khosrow Daivari are taking out their frustration in WWE."

This past week's edition of Raw featured Hassan pointing out to the live Canadian audience in Toronto that the terrorists who attacked the United States on 9/11/01 had entered via the Canadian border."
